Oneonta Gorge

Oneonta Gorge

Located just off the Historic Columbia River Highway, Oneonta Falls is one of the more unique waterfalls in the area. While the distance from the parking lot isn't that far, less the a mile, the journey to get there can be rather treacherous. Start off with stunning views in the narrow moss covered gorge walls. The hike starts fairly easy. Then a large log jam must be scaled. The logs are very slippery and one wrong step can end badly. After the log jam you follow the river through the gorge. Most of the hike is must be in the river. The river is not very deep for most of the hike but there was one stretch where a long stretch was well over 4 feet with nothing but slick sharp rocks on either side. I wore waders and held my camera gear above my head to make sure it didn't get wet while hoping i wouldn't slip on the river rock. In the end it was well worth the breath taking view and waterfall.
